Phoenix Improv Festival 2022
June 24-25, 2022Travel Information
What venue(s) will be a part of the festival?
The festival will take place entirely in our digital venue with three stages. Performers will have a special URL which will allow them to visit the venue, classrooms, and all other locations from a central digital space (so you won't have to keep track of a dozen links.)
What lodging options are available?
The festival is online, so you can sleep in your own warm beds. Our digital hotel is available to all performers. One one hand it's just a fun nod to our history of providing hotel rooms, but there will be activities and access to PIF staff in the digital hotel.
Festival Information
How much stage time will performers receive?
Each performer will receive a minimum of one twenty minute set on stage (unless a shorter time is requested). Longer and/or multiple sets may be possible depending on the final lineup of performances. Most shows will take place in the evening MST. Accommodations for troupes will be made as much as possible to place shows in time slots appropriate for your home time zone.
What is the range of shows and styles the festival is seeking?
All shows (shortform, longform, and other) are welcome provided they are improvised and not pre-recorded. There are no restrictions on format or family friendliness. We actively seek out diverse groups and discourage performances which punch down.
We are specifically looking for three kinds of performances for our three digital stages:
a) Live streams of your in-person performances
b) Purely online shows
c) Virtual Reality shows
If you have another type of show that can be viewed in an online fashion, talk to us. We can probably find a way to make it work.
If you have any questions, please reach out.
What is the local improv scene like?
The Phoenix community is one that almost always seeks out experimentation in the new ways improv can exist and change and grow. That's one of the reasons we're looking to put on a festival that celebrates what we've loved about festivals past with new ideas of how we can exist together online.
What are the festival's goals?
We are hoping to put on a safe festival. Because even though the pandemic seems to be slowing down, it's not gone yet, and we don't know what changes might come in the coming months. But we also realize there is something special about being able to laugh and spend time talking together. Watching online shows with a chat option is great. But it doesn't have that festival experience. In 2020, we figured out how to do a show online. We're hoping in 2022 to learn how to really have a festival experience together online.
What are the selection criteria for this festival?
Video quality does not matter as long as we can see or hear you. Please send a current show that is representative of your current work (not a fantastic show from 2017). We do not accept edited performances.
We love showcasing improv as a beautiful artform. We love to feature shows that love what improv can be.
Our submissions are being run through The Improv Network. We realize some VR performances are not fully compatible with this medium. We're happy to make accommodations for that situation.
What unique improv experiences will performers gain?
Oh my gosh. Are you kidding me? We are going to have a blast. We have a lot of surprises and easter eggs in our venue this year. It's online, but we have a lot of activities going on in that space. (Yes, that includes Werewolf tables).
The Festival is produced by CareFree Write Productions (CFWP), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. This organization looks to serve as a support network for developing local artists, an educational resource for the community, and an integral part of Phoenix's growing cultural movement.
