The Institution Theater
Austin, TXAbout The Institution Theater
The Institution Theater was founded by Tom Booker in 2008. At least, we think that it was 2008. We're not really sure. It was a slow start and we weren't really paying attention. We are certain, however, that The Institution Theater was founded by Tom Booker. Tom Booker had just recently moved to Austin from Los Angeles. Tom has tons of experience in improv and tons of stories about his exploits in "show business." If you would like to more about Tom's experience, just go over to the web page that tells about Tom Booker. If you would like to learn more about Tom Booker's stories, just ask him and he will tell you his stories. He'll tell you his stories over and over again. You have been warned.
Anyway, through a series of bad breaks and misunderstandings, Tom Booker ended becoming roommates with a man named Asaf Ronen in 2009 (Asaf had moved from New York to Austin shortly before Tom Booker.) And a match was made in Improv Heaven! Although at that time, Tom and Asaf didn't like each other very much, they shared a love of improv and making people laugh. Soon Tom and Asaf were teaching side by side and The Institution Theater took off.
The Institution Theater opened their official space in January of 2011 (Although we had already been teaching and performing in it for months. It's all so confusing.) and is dedicated to "making the impossible happen." That means that we like to use our talents, gifts and abilities to create works that are completely unlike anything you have never seen before, that make you smile and touch your heart.
We aim to push the boundaries of art, entertainment and the law. (Which is why we've received two Cease & Desist Letters: one from Fox Studios for Firefly: The Musical and one from Viacom for our stage adaptation of South Park.)
Please join us as we continue our journey to the oh, so silly unknown.
