The Dick & The Dame have been performing together since 2008. Conceived by veteran improvisers John Conroy and Stacy Rumaker as a love letter to film noir, they developed their own unique form to incorporate noir elements and amplify the atmosphere. Underscoring just how nerdy these two are: their research resulted in a 28 page show bible, and included making recipes from 1940s magazines and taking swing dance lessons. Just in case.
Taking the suggestion of the title of a film noir that has never been made, Conroy & Rumaker bring the gritty underbelly of 1940’s Los Angeles to life in hilariously twisted ways. They improvise a spiderweb of corruption, deceit, greed, sex and laughs, set during the dark and dangerous days of Tinseltown’s most iconic period. Their shows go well beyond "funny film noir" however; Conroy & Rumaker are smart, playful actors who deftly find ways to illustrate modern social commentary through a vintage lens, and they inject raw, emotional truth into their performances. Their chemistry is palpable, whether playing lovers, rivals, gangsters, torch singers or maids. Conroy & Rumaker also don't shy away from drama or suspense - they believe the improvisers job is first to entertain rather than be funny - and they've succeeded in making audiences laugh, cry, and scream in the same set. The Dick & The Dame is engrossing, exhilarating, and a theatrical experience that transcends improv comedy.
