Dancing in the Now

Want to embody the audience’s suggestion? You’re looking for alternative inputs for your improv? This workshop is designed to enhance physicality in any scene, as well as provide improvisors with useful tools for group games - think Harold. Through mindful breathing and exercises designed to shift our focus onto physical sensations, we will train our mind to fully commit to the present moment. Combining some of the principles of physical theater, viewpoints, and contact improvisation, we will then explore the ever-changing relationships between our body and space/other bodies on stage, and the dynamics of action and reaction in movement, along with the playful interactions that spontaneously take place when we are fully committed to the now. To conclude, we will play some scenes and observe just how much all that physical work added to our performance! The workshop has been very popular among the improv community in Australia and New Zealand (namely Australian International Improv Fest and New Zealand Improv Fest) and Europe (Meet Share Dance Fest). Its master class feel makes it particularly suitable for festivals or intensives. It has been designed keeping in mind the needs of those improvisors who are fascinated by movement and physicality, and would love to explore the non-verbal side of scenework.
